Building a mobile app from idea to launch
When an app truly pays off, roughly what it costs and what development looks like step by step — explained so you understand every sentence without a technical background.

What building a mobile app means
Building a mobile app means having someone design and program an application for the phone — for Android, for iPhone, or an app that opens straight from the browser. In Slovakia, a simple app costs on the order of thousands of euros, a mid-sized business app low tens of thousands; development takes weeks to months depending on scope.
Picture the difference between a website and an app like this: a website is a shop window on the high street — every passer-by can see it. An app is a loyalty card in your customer's pocket — always on them, and it gives you a way to bring them back.
Below you will find an honest answer to whether you need an app at all, what types exist, roughly what they cost, and what development looks like from idea to launch.
When you need an app — and when a website is enough
Let us start honestly: many businesses do not need a mobile app. If someone is selling you an app before they have asked what you want to achieve, be on your guard.
A simple test to tell the difference looks like this:
- An app pays off: customers order, book or buy from you repeatedly — an app cuts that down to two taps, and you can reach them directly on their phone.
- An app pays off: you need to send notifications to the phone — people notice an appointment reminder, while an e-mail often goes unread.
- An app pays off: your people work in the field and need jobs, photos and signatures in their pocket, even without an internet connection.
- A website is enough: people find you through Google and mainly need information, prices and contact details.
- A website is enough: customers buy from you once in a long while — nobody installs an app for a single purchase.
- A website is enough: you are only testing whether there is demand for the service — a website is the faster and cheaper start.
Web app, Android/iOS, or PWA?
“An app” is not one single thing. Android apps from Google Play, iPhone apps, web applications and PWAs — each route differs in price and in what it can do. Here are all three in plain language:
| Type | What it is in one sentence | When it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Web application | A program that runs in the web browser — nothing to install, and it works on desktop and mobile alike. | Ordering systems, customer portals, internal company tools. |
| Android / iOS app | A classic app downloaded from Google Play or the App Store, with full access to the phone. | When you fully need notifications, the camera, GPS or offline use. |
| PWA (progressive web app) | An app that installs straight from the browser — no app store, one tap and it appears on the phone's home screen. | When you want an app in your customer's pocket without the cost of two separate store versions. |
Our apps you can see for yourself
Do not buy a pig in a poke. These are apps we designed, built, and that are genuinely running today:
- MojLekár — a communication system for medical practices. More than 50 practices use it, and its AI voice assistant Olivia handles 8 phone calls at once. It works as a website, a mobile app and a phone line.
- Nehnuteľnosti Bratislava — an app that brings real-estate agents people interested in properties.
- BOZP Academy — a system that handles companies' mandatory workplace-safety training online, without the paperwork.
How app development works
App development with us is not a black box you drop money into and see what falls out six months later. It has four steps, and you see results at every one:
- 1Scope and a fixed quote — on a free intro call we agree what the app should do and for whom. Within 24 hours you receive a fixed price with a precise scope.
- 2Clickable prototype — you get a design you can tap through on your phone as if it were the finished app, even though not a single line of code exists yet. At this stage changes are fast and cheap.
- 3Development in weekly increments — the app is built piece by piece, and you see and try it as it grows. No six months of silence.
- 4Launch and support — we deploy the app, train you, and after launch we keep looking after it so it keeps on working.
How much app development costs
The figures below are typical market ranges in Slovakia, not our price list — we price every project individually with a fixed quote.
The cheapest route to an app is not a discount but an MVP. An MVP is the first, deliberately small version of the app: it contains only the essentials, so you can test the idea on real customers for a fraction of the full version's price. If it takes off, features get added. If not, you have saved tens of thousands.
- A simple mobile app or PWA — on the order of thousands of euros.
- A mid-sized business app — low tens of thousands of euros.
- A complex platform for many users — tens of thousands of euros and up.
- An MVP version to test the idea — a fraction of the full app's price.
The two worries we hear most often
“I have no technical skills.” That is fine — you do not need any. You click through the prototype, you do not code it: you say what the app should do for your customers, and working out how to build it is our job. At launch we teach you everything.
“What if the brief changes along the way?” It will change — and we count on that. That is why we build in phases: each one has its own scope and fixed price, so a change means adjusting the next phase, not blowing up the budget of the entire app.
Frequently asked questions
How long does mobile app development take?
A simple app or an MVP version is usually ready in a few weeks, a mid-sized business app in 2 – 4 months, a large platform longer. The timeline is driven mostly by the number of features and the speed of feedback — the sooner you respond to the prototype and the finished parts, the faster the build goes. You receive a week-by-week schedule together with the fixed quote, so you know from day one when you will see what.
Do I need one app for Android and another for iPhone?
Not necessarily. A single app can now be built to run on Android and iPhone at the same time, or you can choose a PWA — an app that installs straight from the browser and bypasses the app stores entirely. Which route works out best for you depends on the features you need. We will advise you on a free intro call.
Does the app have to be in the App Store and Google Play?
Only if you need what store apps alone can do — for example full access to notifications or the phone's sensors. The stores have approval processes and fees, which is why a PWA is often the more practical choice: customers add it to their home screen straight from your website, with no store download and no waiting for approval.
Who owns the finished app and its code?
Have the contract confirm that the finished app and its source code — the “recipe” it is built from — belong to you once paid for. This protects you from being locked in to a single supplier: if you ever want to develop the app further with anyone else, you have everything you need. A serious supplier has no problem whatsoever with such a clause.
How much does running the app cost after launch?
After launch, an app needs a server — a rented computer it runs on, much like hosting for a website — and occasional updates so it keeps working on new phones and systems. For a small app this means small monthly amounts; for a larger platform, costs grow with the number of users. We itemise the running costs right in the quote, so nothing surprises you after launch.
I only have an idea for an app. Where do I start?
That is exactly what the free intro call is for. You tell us what the app should do and for whom, and we tell you straight whether it makes sense, whether a website would do, and what an MVP — a small first version for testing the idea — would cost. Within 24 hours you then receive a fixed quote with a precise scope. And feel free to come with nothing but an idea on paper; that is all you need to begin.
